Wawona Hotel – “Victorian Luxury” in Yosemite Park
The historic Wawona Hotel (See reviews and rates) makes for an amazing site to come upon as you drive along highway 41. A true Victorian hotel in Yosemite Park, the establishment offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, a fine collection of old photographs and memorabilia, and basic accommodations in keeping with the style of 1879 when it was built.
Nearby is something even more amazing for a National Park. A complete 9-hole golf course is available complete with pro shop and putting green.
The golf course was built in 1917 and is one of the few completely “organic” golf courses in the United States. The course is watered with gray water reclaimed from other uses and no pesticides are used anywhere on the course.
Greens fees are reasonable and electric carts and clubs are available for rent.[sam id=1 codes=’false’]
Just up the road to the North is the Wawona Store which sells groceries and other basics. A gas station and post office are nearby.
You don’t need to stay at the Wawona to take advantage of the charming dining room. The food is good and therefore the dining room is popular. Unfortunately, they don’t take reservations for groups of less than 8 but live piano will keep you entertained while you wait. There is also a Saturday evening barbecue in the summer that is always fun. Click here to learn more about the Wawona Dining Room and other places to eat in Yosemite Park.
The Wawona Information Center is adjacent where you can get all your questions about the Park answered and find a great collection of books and maps for purchase.
The setting for the Wawona Hotel is not terribly interesting. It is in a large meadow surrounded by lovely evergreen forest. The only nearby points of interest are the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias and the Pioneer History Center.
Despite the undeniable charm of the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite Park the fact is that it is somewhat remote from most of the most interesting sites in the park and frankly a bit expensive for the quality of accommodations and food offered.
If your stay in Yosemite will be short and you are mostly interested in the Yosemite Valley then you would be better off staying in lodging just outside the Valley such as in El Portal. The Valley floor is about an hour away by car from Wawona.
The Wawona Hotel in Yosemite Park is not for families on a budget but if you can afford to stay in memorable hotels and you will be in Yosemite at least 3 nights then you won’t go wrong if you stay one of the nights at the Wawona.
Adventurous families might have more fun and save money at the nearby Wawona Campground featuring nature walks and ranger-led campfire programs.
