Sierras East of Tioga Pass

Tioga Pass is the eastern boundary of Yosemite and the highest paved highway in California.

As the highest point along the Sierra Nevada at this point (9,941 feet) it is where the watershed boundary causes all rain falling west of this point to flow down into the Tuolumne Valley and toward the central valleys of California. Rain falling to the east of this point flows down the Lee Vining Creek towards the deserts to the east.

Highway 120 continues down the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada along a steep and winding path through spectacular views of Lee Vining Canyon.

The transition from the moister western slope of the Sierras and the much trying eastern slopes is very striking.
