Yosemite Gates of the Valley in Winter
The Gates of the Valley is a term used to describe the incredible sight one sees as they enter Yosemite Valley boxed in by sheer rock walls rising thousands of feet into the air on each side. One can only imagine the effect this view must have had on early explorers who were unprepared by anything else on Earth they had probably seen.[sam id=1 codes=’false’]
It is also no wonder the hard time they had trying to convince the rest of the world that such a place existed. Without cameras to accurately record the Gates of the Valley they could only rely on rough sketches and their descriptions to convince the incredulous public.
It is really a miracle that in the middle of the Civil War President Lincoln agreed to grant Federal protection to this wonder of nature.
